Warum wir heute nicht den 300. Geburtstag der Freimaurerei feiern

Der 24. Juni 2017 ist ein besonderer Tag: Weltweit feiern Logen »300 Jahre Freimaurerei«. Wobei… 300 Jahre?! Da kann doch was nicht stimmen, oder? Jein!

300 Jahre Freimaurerei

Am 24. Juni 1717 haben sich im Londoner Gasthaus »Goose and Gridiron« lediglich vier Freimaurer-Logen zur ersten Großloge der Welt zusammengeschlossen. Wir feiern also eigentlich nur den Geburtstag der Großloge von England, die für Freimaurer bis heute allerdings so etwas wie die Großloge der Großlogen ist. Doch sogar deren Geburtsjahr 1717 ist inzwischen unter Forschern umstritten.

Klar ist wenigstens, dass die Freimaurerei als solche deutlich älter ist. Aber wie alt – auch darüber lässt sich heute nach wie vor nur spekulieren.

300 Jahre Freimaurerei – wie alt sind wir wirklich?

Protokolle des Vorläufers der bis heute existierenden schottischen Loge »Mother Kilwinning« sollen bis 1642 zurückreichen. Und der Begriff »Freemason« (Freimaurer) taucht sogar schon 1396 in Dokumenten der Kathedrale von Exeter auf. Eigentlich ist das auch keine besonders große Überraschung:

Freimaurer-Logen sind u. a. aus den Steinmetz-Bruderschaften des Mittelalters hervorgegangen, also den Vereinigungen der Männer, die Kathedralen gebaut haben.

Der Übergang von den wirklich handwerklich tätigen Steinmetz-Bruderschaften zur heute existierenden symbolischen Freimaurerei war ein fließender Prozess. Der 24. Juni 1717 bzw. die erste Freimaurer-Großlogengründung gilt als Abschluss dieser Entwicklung und damit als Geburtstag der sog. »modernen Freimaurerei«. Deshalb wird der Tag in diesem Jahr nicht nur von der United Grand Lodge of England groß gefeiert.

Johannistag und Sommersonnenwende

Übrigens: Das Gründungs-Datum war kein Zufall. Der 24. Juni ist der Johannistag (ja, mit »i«), benannt nach Johannes (ja, mit »e«) dem Täufer. Dieser ist nicht nur Schutzpatron der Steinmetze, sondern auch der Freimaurerlogen, die die ersten drei Erkenntnisstufen der Freimaurerei vermitteln (Lehrling, Geselle, Meister).

Außerdem fällt jährlich in diesen Zeitraum auch die Sommersonnenwende, die in vielen Kulturen und Religionen eine besondere symbolische Bedeutung hat. Und da »Licht« in der Freimaurerei ein wichtiges Symbol ist (für Liebe, Erkenntnis, Wärme), passt der Tag natürlich ganz besonders gut.
