»Soldat, aber Selbstdenker«: Die »Zeit« widmet Gerhard von Scharnhorst zum 200. Todestag ein Portrait  – Scharnhorst hatte es aus einfachsten Verhältnissen zu einem der bedeutendsten deutschen Militärreformer und Nationalhelden gebracht.

Was leider nicht im Artikel steht: Scharnhorst war Freimaurer – er wurde 1779 in die Göttinger Loge »Zum Goldenen Zirkel« aufgenommen. Nach seinem Tod dichtete einer seiner Freimaurer-Brüder auf »der Freiheit deutscher Waffenschmied«:

»Keiner war wohl treuer, reiner, / Näher stand dem König keiner, – / Doch dem Volke schlug sein Herz. / Ewig auf den Lippen schweben / wird er, wird im Volke leben, / besser als in Stein und Erz.«

Wie Recht Max von Schenkendorf mit seinen Zeilen behalten sollte, wird eigentlich erst in der Rückschau klar: Bruder Scharnhorst, nach dem u. a. Schiffe und Kasernen benannt sind, wurde erstaunlicherweise gleichermaßen von Preußen, Nationalsozialisten und Bundesrepublikanern verehrt – und verklärt!
